Job Summary
The Corrosion Control Technician / Damage Prevention Technician is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting corrosion control systems for pipeline infrastructure as well as protecting underground utilities and infrastructure by locating, marking, and documenting utility lines prior to excavation activities. This role ensures the integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance of pipelines by implementing cathodic protection systems, conducting inspections, collecting data, supporting integrity management programs, prevent service interruptions, safety hazards, and costly damages by ensuring compliance with state regulations and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Install, test, inspect, and maintain cathodic protection (CP) systems, including rectifiers, anodes, bonds, casings and test stations.
Perform pipe-to-soil potential surveys, close interval surveys (CIS), DCVG/ACVG surveys, and interference testing.
Conduct coating inspections and assist with coating repairs as required.
Monitor and adjust rectifier outputs to maintain adequate protection levels.
Perform routine pipeline integrity inspections in accordance with company procedures and regulatory standards.
Collect, document, and analyze corrosion-related data; prepare reports and maintain accurate records.
Troubleshoot stray current, AC interference, and other corrosion-related issues.
Coordinate with operations, construction, and engineering teams during maintenance and capital projects.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company safety policies.
Respond to utility locate requests in a timely and efficient manner.
Accurately locate and mark underground utilities (electric, gas, water, sewer, telecommunications, fiber, etc.) using specialized equipment.
Interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and GIS data.
Follow state “Call Before You Dig” laws and company safety procedures.
Report damages, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately.
Participate in ongoing safety meetings and technical training.
Participate in emergency response activities as needed.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED (Associate degree in corrosion technology or related field preferred).
1+ years of experience in pipeline corrosion control or related field.
Knowledge of cathodic protection principles and corrosion mitigation techniques.
Ability to read and interpret pipeline maps, alignment sheets, and electrical schematics.
Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain.
Proficiency with corrosion testing equipment and data collection tools.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations.
Preferred Certifications
NACE (AMPP) Cathodic Protection Tester (CP1) or higher certification.
AC/DC interference mitigation training.
OSHA safety training (10-hour or 30-hour).
