What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer for the Component and Material Evaluation (CME) team. In this role, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to addressing complex multidisciplinary issues that have a direct impact on national security. As an R&D Systems Engineer, you will have the unique opportunity to influence the future of our Nuclear Deterrence (ND) mission by supporting both stockpile weapons programs and weapon modernization initiatives.
In this role, you collaborate with a dedicated team to plan and manage the evaluation of stockpile components and materials, while implementing Federal and local ND procedures. Our team provides guidance and expertise on life-cycle testing and collaborates with ND agencies to develop the necessary equipment for testing components and products. Our efforts are crucial in supporting the Annual Assessment process, as well as reliability and surety assessments for the enduring stockpile.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Plan and manage the execution of engineering programs for Sandia's customers and sponsors.
- Serve as the primary representative to customers and partners for ND modernization programs, negotiating, managing, and delivering all component evaluation scope for several technology families.
- Establish strong relationships with key influencers and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems and component engineering teams, our Science and Technology (S&T) community, independent technical assessment partners, and production agencies.
- Identify defects and aging trends, understand performance margins, and make predictive assessments of weapon components and their materials through comprehensive component evaluation activities.
- Chair Stockpile Finding Investigations (SFIs) as a System Evaluation Engineer (SEE) to determine the root cause of anomalies discovered during component evaluations, assess their impact on the safety, security, and reliability of the stockpile, and guide discussions to ensure thorough understanding and resolution of issues.
- Engage in lifecycle management of evaluated components, focusing on key phases such as design, testing, and production.
- Identify and manage risks associated with component evaluations, employing strategies for risk assessment and mitigation.
- Document findings and recommendations, preparing reports that communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to stakeholders.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work full-time onsite in Albuquerque, NM. This position also requires the ability to travel up to 15% to various NNSA sites.
Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q Clearance or equivalent with the ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 15 access, which will require random polygraphs.
Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
- Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
- Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is preferred, with a strong understanding of electrical design principles.
- Proven experience in systems engineering with a focus on component evaluation, including familiarity with circuit-level design and component testing methodologies.
- Experience in managing engineering programs, including planning, execution, and documentation of findings and recommendations.
- Experience identifying, preventing, and mitigating technical product defects and risks.
- Proven ability to identify defects and aging trends, understand performance margins, and make predictive assessments of weapon components and their materials.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in statistical analysis tools and methodologies for assessing component performance and reliability.
- Familiarity with conducting SFIs or similar investigations to determine root causes of anomalies and assess their impact on safety, security, and reliability.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to build strong relationships and facilitate discussions among diverse teams.
About Our Team
The Integrated Stockpile Evaluation (ISE, Group 2250) mission is to provide trusted leadership for Sandia and NNSA in the planning, development, execution, and analysis of an effective stockpile evaluation program while providing exemplary knowledge management for the program to support stockpile decisions. ISE focuses on providing quality products (data, testers, etc.) to support and enable stockpile decisions. We ensure operations comply with laboratory policy, to include the Realize Product Procedures (RPPs) and corporate policies. In addition, the ISE team will also comply with all interim guidance as promulgated from government and laboratory management.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
